カタカナ英語について
前回、「アメリカ英語とイギリス英語」と言うことで、英語にも色々あるという感じはご理解いただけたと思います。
しかし、我々日本人が英語を難しいと感じる事は他にも理由があるようです(^^ゞ
皆さんも英語だと思って使ったら通じなかった、なんてことありませんか？
日本語のカタカナで表す語って英語じゃないかというイメージが強いのですが、それが必ずしも英語とは限りません。
英語だと思って使っていた言葉が実は英語っぽく作った言葉だったり、フランス語やポルトガル語だったり、英語を変化させて作った言葉だったりすることがよくあります。
また、言葉は英語だけれども本来の意味とは違った使われ方をしているものなどもあります。
このようにさまざまな経緯を経てできたカタカナ語が英語だと勘違いされて使われてるケースがよく見られます。
次のカタカナ語は実は英語ではないのをご存知ですか？
「ガードマン」という言葉は英語らしいですが、実は和製英語です。英語で「ガードマン」を表すときは「guard」や「security guard」 を使います。
また、「アンケート」も実は英語ではありません。この言葉はフランス語から由来しています。
英語で「アンケート」を表す言葉は「questionnaire」が一般的です。
有名なところでよく看板で目にするタバコの「tobaco」はポルトガル語で英語では「cigarette[シガレット]」です。
またモーニングコールも英語のようですが、実は英語では「wake-up call」と言います。
シルバーシートは「priority seat」、フリーダイヤル番号は「toll-free number」、ホッチキスは「stapler」、レストランなどのバイキング（料理）は「buffet」などなど私たちの生活の中には英語のようで英語でない言葉がたくさんちりばめられています。
